Kenya is a land of breathtaking beauty, with scattered savannas and green rolling hills. Its people encompass a certain generosity and genuine nature. The land however, as many places in Africa, has been affected by widespread poverty that makes every day a struggle to survive. Limited access to health care and virtually no health insurance for the vast majority makes treatment a luxury. There is a shortage of doctors and surgeons for a population of 45 million inhabitants, not including the influx of refugees from neighboring warring countries. Nairobi is East Africa’s biggest city and cases are flown in from all the bordering countries. The need for surgical care for these children is urgent as many of them cannot survive without it, yet their families are unable to afford it.
